"Alice and Abel" was written after multiple viewings of "O Brother Where art Thou?" and me being completely swooned by the siren scene when they sing "Leave Nobody but the Baby". It's a simple, acapella/lullaby a mother sings telepathically to her young son as he is caught in the middle of a school shooting and trying to remain calm while also attempting to make sense of the situation.
lyrics
Mama where can I run
Theres a boy with a loaded gun
Baby hide in silence
in the face of violence
Away and out of the sun
Mama what am I to do
If i should hear him shoot
Baby dont be frantic
Try not to panic
Ill run like the wind for you
Mama why is he sad?
Why is he goin mad?
Baby not everybody has it easy
With the happiness we have
Mama he looks confused
It's like he hasnt a clue
Baby not every child is raised with a smile
Along their broken youth
Mama Im as still as stone
I feel so far from home
Baby just be patient in your location
And know youre never alone
Mama he's back again
They have no defense
It's the same old story with no fair warning
The story has no end
